Chief Engineer Job Description

The primary function of the Second Engineer is to supervise the daily operations and maintenance of all machinery and fire-fighting equipment on-board.

A second engineer is the chief engineer’s right hand and is responsible for assisting the chief engineer in the efficient running of the yacht. They have a good working knowledge of all yacht systems and can complete basic maintenance and repair independently, as well as effectively assist the chief on advanced projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Execution of the planned maintenance
• Assisting the Chief Engineer
• Supervision of repairs
• Advising Chief Engineer on ordering of spares and consumables
• Ensuring engine room is properly manned
• Always ensuring crew practice safe working procedures and wear safety gear when required
• Guidance and proper training of juniors
• Supervising the daily operations and maintenance of all machinery and fire-fighting equipment on-board

 
Required Skills

• Knowledge of general systems onboard: diesel, refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing, electronics and outboards
• Team player, able to assist with some deck duties; line handling, water sports
• Flexible and adaptable
• Excellent planning for preventative maintenance
• Ability to prioritize and organise
• Multitasking
